Hair loss is an emotionally painful condition for women. The presence of hair is vital for maintaining good looks and being attractive. This is especially important for women due to society norms. Sudden hair loss in a woman can lead to psychological disorders like depression, anxiety etc. Sudden hair loss may also cause marital discord, social isolation etc.

A woman in her life time will lose less hair compared to men. With age men get a receding hair line or bald patches whereas a woman's hair will thin out. Normal hair loss is approximately 100-125 hair per day in a woman. These hair are replaced naturally without any medication.

Change in hormones in woman can lead to hair loss. These hormone changes are caused due to causes like thyroid abnormalities, menopause or pregnancy etc.

Most common causes for hair loss are:



  • Taking and stopping of birth control pills is a possible cause of hair loss in women.


  • Physical stress, surgery, illness, anemia, sudden weight change can lead to hair loss.


  • High emotional stress can cause hair loss.


  • Certain medical procedures like chemotherapy can also cause hair loss.


  • Nutrient deficiencies, low iron in hemoglobin and poor diet inevitably leads to hair loss.


  • Ringworms, certain skin diseases, illness and immune disorders also cause hair loss in women.


Prevention: As we all know prevention is better than cure, this is especially applicable to hair loss. Prevention of hair loss is easier to achieve than regrowth of hair. Some important factors which

affect hair loss are:



  • Regular exercise is a must, this keeps androgen within limit.


  • Adopt stress relieving techniques to reduce hair loss.


  • Healthy nutritious food containing vitamins and minerals is important for prevention of hair loss.


  • Do not undergo procedures for hair treatment which have not undergone extensive scientific research and clinical tests.
