Why Do You have Hair Loss?

>> Thursday 18 December 2008

Dealing with hair loss can sometimes be the final straw. You think to yourself, what else is going to go wrong with me?

There are many causes of hair loss and most of the causes can be grouped into 4 main categories, shown below.

1. Stress. Stress can wreak havoc on our system. It is blamed for heart attacks, high blood pressure and yes--hair loss. If you are going through a very stressful time you may experience some hair loss. Rest assured that after you stress is removed, the hair loss will stop and you may even regrow the lost hair.

2. Genetics. Some people will have hair loss thanks to Mom/Dad or Grandma/Grandpa or even further down the family tree. Contrary to popular belief that the hair loss gene comes from the mothers side. Actually it can come from either side - sorry about that.

3. Medications. Some prescription drugs have known side effects that include hair loss. The great thing about this (if you want to be an optimist) is that as soon as you stop taking the medication your loss should stop and lost hair should re-grow. Chemotherapy is known to kill rapidly growing cells and the hair follicle is a rapidly growing cell, so hair loss is a very common side effect of chemo.

4. Age/Lifestyle/Habits. New mothers have been known to experience hair loss after the birth of their baby. Also, if you like to wear your hair in tight braids or cornrows, you could experience hair loss. Also, if you have the habit on pulling at your hair, you could end up with permanent hair loss. Just stop pulling your hair!!

In short, there are many possible causes for your hair loss. You must look at your circumstances to see which category you fall into and seek treatment that is designed for your type of hair loss.
