Signs of Going Bald
>> Monday, 1 December 2008
The most common type of hair loss is male pattern baldness, which is inherited. This type of hair loss typically begins in the front hairline and the top of the head. The hair loss will slowly progress until the only hair that remains are the ones around the ears, the sides, and the back of the head. Women with this condition will usually experience thinning throughout the entire scalp.
Our hair is an important part of our appearance, and because of this, hair loss can have a profound effect in our self-esteem and make us feel unattractive.
Signs of hair loss
Hair loss occurs at different ages in different individuals. Some may start losing their hair as early as their late teens, while some do not begin losing their hair until they are in their 50s. Those who start losing their hair begin noticing their hair falling out while combing their hair or notice large clumps of hair collecting in the shower drain. You may not notice right away, but soon you will see your hairline slowly getting higher or a bald spot becoming larger at the top of the head.
Causes of hair loss
One of the primary causes of male pattern baldness is a high amount of the male hormone testosterone within the hair follicle. After a period of time the hormone will begin to degrade the hair follicle.
Another factor contributing to hair loss is stress. Experiencing a high stress situation can cause massive hair loss in both men and women. However, this form of hair loss is only temporary, with the hair eventually growing back, unlike male pattern baldness in which the hair will not grow back.
